I got so high one time It was in junior high In the basement of a rec center beside a pool. Inside a mega church where my friend's father worked We scored it off a janitor who said that we seemed cool I was hand-shaking mind-wrecking stoned And filled with all the love I've ever known Stars in the firmament Look down on the sacraments Upon the mixer and the massive stacks of Mackie towers There was no color cast from light passed through stained glass Just the lighting rigs and subs so you could feel the power of God I was so far gone And knew that I could not go back home Inside a bathroom stall My friend threw up and bawled Beside the room in which we both attended Sunday school It was the first he'd cried since his mother died He pulled himself together washed his hands and acted cool And lo all the angels proclaimed That neither one of us would be the same

East Texas 04:02
Pharaoh told his dream to Joseph Joseph told Pharaoh the truth I was in East Texas at the apex of a misspent youth I was so warm and lonely I was full of banquet beer It was pretty good while it lasted I had a pretty good couple years Then I saw burned-out highways and semis in my dreams Sleeping in a van towards New Orleans Scorched farmland and corn with blighted ears I knew that I was headed for some hard, hard years On the wind the scent of Camels On the ground the smell of leaves We had a place to stay in Austin We had beds and it was free I was misquoting Faulkner and throwing up in the street I said to no one moderation has never been my biggest strength Then I saw burned-out highways and semis in my dreams Sleeping in a van towards New Orleans Scorched farmland and corn with blighted ears I knew that I was headed for some hard, hard years Clutches, radiator hoses, transistors, and minds Pushed hard enough and anything will break if you give it time After that was years of plenty eaten up by years of lean And Joseph he said unto Pharaoh it was true what he'd seen in his dream

Buy me a drink, sing me a song Give me a kiss 'cause I can't stay long Break me apart and cleave my mind in two We were staying up late, being real bad We smoked cigarettes that we stole from your dad I bent my head across the space towards you You moved away, such is life It was the fourth of July And it was nice When I was 18 I was real hot shit I was reading lots of books and an insufferable prick But things can soften over time Time it flies like a paper plane It wobbles once and hits the pavement I had it coming and I got mine You moved away, such is life It was the fourth of July And it was nice

All the saints adore you And statues bat their eyes The way you watch the sidewalk Makes even angels sigh You should've been a cloud I think you'd have less trouble now Making storms from nothing and floating around Don't seem as fitting on the ground On your way home from work When you walk by my street Trees stretch across the pavement And bend their limbs to meet You should've been a cloud I think you'd have less trouble now Making storms from nothing and floating around Don't seem as fitting on the ground

When it's easy living in a pleasant time of year And you're drinking seltzer in the side yard And you're nowhere else but here And a burnt-leaf wind brings that telltale left-eye tear And you grip hard to the arms of the lawn chair Just waiting for the fear And the crush of the chest From the dread that all that's good That you love that exists Will be torn apart by Time the great wrecker of it all Every beating heart and scattered star will fall To time the great wrecker While true enough I reckon Get your chin up off your chest It hasn't happened yet And if a deal were offered If I could make it true I'd wrap it all beneath my sternum To keep it far from you But when you girls get older If you find it in you too Just creeping in some corner I know you'll know what to do With the crush of the chest From the dread that all that's good That you love that exists Will be torn apart by Time the great wrecker of it all Every beating heart and scattered star will fall To time the great wrecker While true enough I reckon Get your chin up off your chest It hasn't happened yet I've learned a thing or two About how things here are arranged The good news and the bad news Is everything you know is gonna change In time the great wrecker of it all Every beating heart and scattered star will fall To time the great wrecker While true enough I reckon Get your chin up off your chest It hasn't happened yet
